Reviews
Much has been written individually on the subject of these cousin queens underlying whose quasi-relationship - they could never meet - lay the predominant and powerful influence of religion on the politics of their very different circumstances, and in particular of Elizabeth's. In this 'double biography' Jane Dunn has most skilfully balanced the articulate and extraordinary monarch Elizabeth with the enigmatic and inspirational Mary, not an easy task. The results are insightful, illuminating and frequently moving. Albeit that the wealth of Mary's correspondence seems to occasionally provide a certain repetitiveness, this element in turn perhaps reflects on the same almost compulsive balance between these two such diverse personalities and female sovereigns, with their very different pressures and considerations, a balance that Jane Dunn has most successfully achieved and maintained throughought, in a compassionate and readable style.
